Born in 2007 B.S. in Ilam district of Nepal, Jhala Nath Khanal is a veteran Nepalese politician and a towering figure in Nepal’s leftist political movement. With a political journey spanning over five decades, he has played a significant role in shaping the country’s modern political history. He is widely respected for his dedication to progressive politics, social justice, and socialist ideals.
Khanal began his political career at a young age and became one of the founding members of the Coordination Committee of the Communist Revolutionaries in 2032 B.S. (1976 A.D.). This committee later played a key role in the formation of the Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-ML). He was elected General Secretary of the CPN (ML), a position that reflected his strong leadership and ideological clarity.
Later, he became a founding member and the Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML), one of the major political parties in the country. After years of political evolution and ideological struggle, he now serves as a senior leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist), a party established to carry forward leftist values in a changing political landscape.
Khanal’s most notable role came in 2011 when he served as the 34th Prime Minister of Nepal from February to August. His tenure came at a historically crucial moment, as the country was undergoing a major political transition from a centuries-old monarchy to a federal democratic republic. During this sensitive period, Khanal played a key role in advancing the peace process, contributing to constitution-drafting efforts, and promoting national unity. Alongside his political leadership, he took important steps toward national development by initiating major infrastructure projects, including hydropower development and the Nagdhunga Tunnel—both vital for the nation’s economic growth and improved connectivity. His leadership during this transformative phase reflected his commitment to building a stable, inclusive, and progressive Nepal.
Throughout his political life, Jhala Nath Khanal has remained committed to the principles of Marxism-Leninism. He has consistently advocated for social justice, federalism, democratic governance, and inclusion. His voice has been influential in the constitution-making process, and he has always stood for the rights of marginalized communities and the creation of a just and equitable society.
On a personal note, Jhala Nath Khanal is married to Ravi Laxmi Chitrakar and is the proud father of Nirbhik Khanal Chitrakar. Despite his long and active political career, he continues to pursue academic interests. He is currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Buddhist Philosophy at Lumbini University, reflecting his deep interest in history, philosophy, and culture.
